Support LGBTQIA+ youth in regional schools

Every year in June, the LGBTQIA+ community and allies all around the world celebrate Pride Month! Pride Month is a chance for queer people and allies to celebrate their unique pride, as well as the achievements, history, and future of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This Pride Month, we’re featuring one of our LGBTQIA+ NGO partners, Minus18, and sharing how you can get involved and support their work through i=Change during June.

Introducing Minus18

Minus18 is Australia’s Champion for LGBTQIA+ youth, improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth through awareness and visibility, LGBTQIA+ education and life-affirming programs. Minus18 is working to create an Australia where all young people are safe, empowered, and surrounded by people that support them.

Awareness and visibility

Minus18 builds awareness of the 2 in 3 LGBTQIA+ youth who still experience abuse for who they are. Minus18’s digital campaigns and partnerships start crucial conversations to amplify the voice of the next generation.

LGBTQIA+ education

Creating an Australia free from discrimination is a job for everyone. Minus18 transforms awareness into action through LGBTQIA+ training, workshops and resources that enable others to champion inclusivity – no matter their location.

Life-affirming programs

Minus18’s preventive model of mental health support tackles social isolation by creating spaces where LGBTQIA+ youth belong. Young people are at the forefront of Minus18’s programs – and they’re empowering them to be the next generation of LGBTQIA+ leaders.

You can find out more about Minus18, including their current strategic plan, by visiting the Minus18 website.

Since joining up with i=Change at the start of 2023, Minus18’s project has focused on making a difference for LGBTQIA+ young people in schools through LGBTQIA+ education, and they’ve raised almost $4,000 with the support of participating businesses such as Epzen Australia. As part of their project, all donations made via the i=Change platform support Minus18 to deliver LGBTQIA+ inclusion education and training in schools.

How Minus18 makes a difference

Even in 2024, LGBTQIA+ young people still face discrimination, including in schools. Up to 21% of Australian high school students identify as LGBTQIA+, but 66% of Australian LGBTQIA+ youth experience bullying or harassment based upon their identity. Even more, 81% of LGBTQIA+ students believe their school doesn’t support them, and teachers aren’t doing enough to stop bullying.

Since its formation over 25 years ago, Minus18 has worked to change the lives of LGBTQIA+ young people all across Australia, and create an Australia where all young people are safe, empowered, and surrounded by people that support them. In particular, Minus18 has delivered LGBTQIA+ inclusion training to over 77 thousand people since 2015, all across Australia, to create schools and communities that are free from discrimination. 93% of school students who participated in a Minus18 inclusion workshop said they had increased their understanding of LGBTQIA+ identity and inclusion, after a session, and felt better prepared to support their LGBTQIA+ peers.

With every dollar raised through i=Change going towards supporting delivery of LGBTQIA+ inclusion training in schools, your support can help make a difference for queer youth in high schools all across Australia. Not only that – this Pride Month, every single dollar donated to Minus18 (including via i=Change) will specifically go towards funding free workshops in regional and rural schools! Minus18 has set the ambitious goal of doubling their impact on I=Change during Pride Month, and – with your support – is aiming to raise another $4000 from i=Change brands.

So, this Pride Month, why not consider committing your business to supporting Minus18, to help make a difference for LGBTQIA+ young people, and create an Australia free from discrimination? Visit Minus18’s project page to get started with supporting LGBTQIA+ young people this Pride Month.
