Championing period equity

With Modibodi, i=Change has launched the Modibodi Period Collective which aims to give confidence and dignity for those that menstruate. This project is a unique partnership with Stars Foundation, Thread Together, and Women’s Health Tasmania, to provide access to reusable period underwear that can be used month after month, year after year.

We will delve into the concept of period equity, shedding light on the challenges surrounding access to menstrual products and the potential for businesses to make a difference.

Partnering for change

Modibodi has partnered with i=Change to launch the Modibodi Period Collective, a unique project aimed at promoting period equity. This partnership is born out of a shared desire to bring about change and offer a solution to a critical issue faced by those who menstruate.

The power of collective action

Collective action has the power to bring about significant change. The Modibodi Period Collective is a testament to this truth. This partnership harnesses the combined strength, influence, and resources of three NGO partners to effect change across Australia.

The Modibodi Period Collective is making strides towards creating a more equitable future for those who menstruate.

“The Stars Foundation’s partnership with Modibodi means that the First Nations young women we mentor and support, can better manage their monthly cycle and health and overall wellbeing. These high tech and environmentally friendly products are especially helpful and welcomed by Stars students living in remote Australian communities, where women’s hygiene products are often unaffordable and/or challenging to access.” Andrea Goddard, Founder & CEO of Stars Foundation

Promoting period equity

Understanding period equity

Period equity is a fundamental human rights issue that goes beyond just access to menstrual products. It encompasses the idea that every person who menstruates should be able to manage their menstruation in a dignified, healthy, and safe way. Period equity means that menstruation should not be a barrier to education, employment, or participation in society. It entails access to accurate information about:

  • Menstruation,
  • The availability of menstrual products, and
  • The ability to manage menstruation with dignity.

Unfortunately, period equity is not yet a reality for many people around the world. Many face barriers to menstrual management due to lack of resources, societal stigma, or lack of education about menstruation. The Modibodi Period Collective is committed to addressing the lack of access and advancing the cause of period equity.

The period issue

What does it entail? A lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and waste management. It’s a worldwide issue affecting the education, health, and overall social status of many individuals who menstruate. While we prefer to focus on the concept of period equity, it’s crucial to acknowledge its roots in this issue.

The Modibodi Period Collective is about dignity, equality, and empowerment. By shifting the narrative, our partners are addressing the issue of access to menstrual products. Through collective action and positive messaging, the project aims to make a difference, one period underwear at a time.

The impact on menstruators

The lack of period equity has far-reaching impacts on menstruators. It’s not just about physical health; it’s about dignity, self-esteem, and participation in everyday life. Without adequate access to menstrual products, many menstruators may face challenges in managing their periods. This can lead to feelings of embarrassment, discomfort, and stress which leads to tough choices between purchasing essentials and the period care they need.

The Modibodi Period Collective is committed to changing this narrative. By promoting period equity, the collective aims to alleviate these challenges and empower menstruators. It’s about ensuring that menstruation is not a barrier to achieving one’s potential. The impact of this work extends beyond the individual level. By empowering menstruators, we are promoting a more equitable and inclusive society. This is the power and promise of period equity.
