The Challenge
Right now, 50 million people are on the brink of famine – a global crisis driven by COVID-19, climate shocks and conflict. 10,000 children are dying every day from hunger.
In times of crisis, girls are the first to be taken out of school and the last to be fed. Families are resorting to early and forced child marriage for their daughters, simply to survive. Hunger also places girls at risk of child labour, gender-based violence, sexual exploitation and unwanted pregnancy.
Plan International’s emergency response provides life-saving food, emergency cash transfers, school meals and child protection in countries hit hardest in the Horn of Africa. The scale and severity of this crisis is growing but action now can save lives and protect girls from the devastating effects of this hunger crisis.
