Empower with literacy

The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation believes literacy is freedom; to take control of your life, be informed, have a voice, stand up for your rights, resist exploitation, be self-confident and self-reliant. Literacy unlocks the door to learning and a world of endless possibilities.

On the 28th of June 2023, we welcomed The Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation on the devastating issue of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children continuing to fall through the cracks of our education system, trapping them in a cycle of vulnerability and illiteracy. In remote areas, up to 70% of Aboriginal adults are ‘functionally illiterate’. This is a national tragedy.

The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) drives life-changing literacy programs in English and Indigenous First Languages, fostering sustainable, lasting change.

Key insights

Are the high rates of illiteracy and innumeracy mainly present in rural and remote communities?

The literacy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities is often seen as distant, but it’s crucial to realise it’s also nearby. Our foundation works closely with communities across the nation to empower those supporting young people and their families in addressing this issue.

What key factors are responsible for such high rates of illiteracy and innumeracy?

Access, especially to healthcare and education, significantly influences our ability to make the most of educational opportunities. Challenges like housing instability, trans-generational illiteracy, negative school experiences, and intergenerational trauma all impact literacy rates and educational engagement.

What are the impacts of the funds raised for Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation through the i=Change platform?

Every donation, regardless of size, enables us to pursue our passionate mission. Funding like this supports our work with First Nations communities, allowing us to strategise, target those in greatest need, and evaluate our impact. Ongoing funding provides the stability needed for long-term goals and initiatives, such as reaching 987 children in critical need of language and literacy support during their early education years.

$12 pays for a day of specialised literacy support in an Indigenous community.
