Growing up in Malawi, I saw first-hand the key roles women play in the family and the community. When I was 15 my father died, and I saw the challenges my mother had raising us alone. If she’d been more empowered, life for her would have been easier.
So, from a very young age, I saw the value in women’s empowerment. Now I have two daughters, and the work I do is to create a future where they can live a life free from violence.
Coming to PNG to be the UN Country Representative to UN Women, I knew would be a challenge. It’s one of the most gender unequal countries on Earth, yet I felt that with my background I have something to contribute – by working with the government and the grassroots organisations we support, I can help create meaningful and lasting change.
I believe with the efforts we’re making, there’s hope for the future for the women and girls of Papua New Guinea.
