Projects: End violence against women and Dignity during disaster
Location: Papua New Guinea and worldwide
UN Women Australia is working to meet the needs of women, train male community leaders to understand and communicate that violence against women is a crime, and provide skills training so women can earn an income and support their families.
On the 16th of August 2023, we welcomed UN Women Australia CEO, Simone Clarke to chat with our CEO and Founder, Jeremy Meltzer, about his recent trip to the Papua New Guinea Highlands – an epicentre for violence against women where over 90% of women experience violence as “daily business”.
In the highlands of PNG, up to 93% of women experience violence regularly – even on a daily basis.
Key insights
How key is it to involve the local communities at the table when carrying out these projects?
To truly adhere to our mission, we must walk the talk by placing women at the core of our programs and initiatives. We don’t simply arrive and dictate change; rather, we engage in a consultative process rooted in evidence and established methodologies developed over decades.
What are the impacts of the funds raised for UN Women Australia through the i=Change platform?
Funding is essential for our programs, delivering impact, protection, and livelihood assurance. While raising funds is a significant part of our work, global change shouldn’t be reduced to dollars alone. Money is vital for emergency response and programs that empower women financially and sustainably in places like Papua New Guinea. The i=Change contributions to organisations like UN Women play a crucial role.
Every $1 raised helps Papua New Guinean women live free from violence and every $15 provides a dignity kit filled with necessities including soap and sanitary napkins for women and girls affected by conflict and disaster
Be the change today.
